Located in Quang Ninh province, Halong bay is the best tourist attraction of Vietnam and also the must for tourists overseas. The name Halong, meaning the “landing dragon” refers to an ancient myth of a dragon said to have appeared in these waters. Halong bay is reminiscent of a magnificent landscape painting with almost three thousand oddly-shaped limestone islets emerge like dragons from an often misty sea covering an area of about 3.800 km2. Inside these small islands are numerous caves with beautiful grottoes. One of the most beautiful grottoes is the Cavern of Wonders which can hold thousands of people and is filled with stalactites and stalagmites of all shapes. Halong bay was inscribed as a world natural heritage by UNESCO in 1994.
